The narrator and his wife are offered the job of leading an archeological expedition in the empty derst north of Mali witht the opportunity to visit the legendary Timbuktu. They are last minute replacements for the French security leaders who were kiiled in a plane crash. The couple were recommended by Doctor Hasan with whom they discovered a lost Kushite city in the North of Sudan. Hasan recommended them to Professor Edwina a sixty year old cantankerous English archaeolgist from Southampton Unviresity leading this Englsih expedition. The rest of the expedition is an eclectic mix and of both the sexes. Of course there is trouble too from drought striken Tuaregs in Mali's northern deserts hence the need for a security detail. And who are the raiders who attacked a salt carvan and what does this have to do with the expedition. Alice and the narrator are doubling looking forward to the expedition. 601 pages. Part of the series of the Saga of the Woden Born but like all of them a completly separate novel only linked in time.

Assault on a salt caravan to Timbuktu The saga of the Woden born Book 15 edition by Allan Spencer Literature Fiction eBooks

I'm only at 20% of this book but if the whole thing is like this I don't think I'll be able to finish it. I don't know if the problem is the editing or lack of it, that maybe the transcription of written text into e-text scrambled the words, or the author just writes oddly but the propositions are messed up, lacking, or used wrong. The hero keeps calling his wife his "girl", his "second in command", or other supposedly endearing terms that are just aggravating. Her name is Alice but he uses it so seldom it's like "who is that?" when her name pops up. They kiss in front of strangers and friends all the time and their motto is "they will just have to get used to it". That might be a little funny once but the author includes it repeatedly. I'm really tired of hearing about how many times they make love and I don't care if they take a shower together and have time for more sex before breakfast or not. Oh, I forgot to mention they only have "sticky" sex. And the hero, who is the narrator, keeps repeating that they are atheists--I guess they want to make sure we don't miss that.

Supposedly the hero and heroine are super security guards for expeditions into strange lands and are always prepared for sudden attacks from robbers or the deadly Tuareg bandits. The story might be pretty good if they author would just get on with it. We don't really need to know how many rounds of ammunition they are carrying do we? Or that Alice likes to pretend she is a fire jinn due to her red hair and uses that to scare the local primitive peoples; did I mention she can shoot a grenade launcher and keep the point up? The author thought we needed to know that too.

On second thought, I'm not going to finish this book. The story isn't interesting enough to skim over the bad parts. I'm sure there will be more bandits to fight off and more sticky sex and more Public Displays of Affection (I learned in college many years ago that PDA's were disgusting!) And the hero and Alice will come out winners in the end and everyone else will "just have to get used to it."

Assault on a salt caravan to Timbuktu The saga of the Woden born Book 15 edition by Allan Spencer Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This adventure story occurred in desert of Mali. It combines scientific expedition, battles with Tuareg rebels and romantic love.

With the attempted robbing of the expedition stuff at the very beginning of the story, you can already feel that there was a tortuous journey in store for the Narrator and his wife Alice, the fire djinns. The story was developed step by step the evil force was exposed gradually and the justice fought back hard and won. All end up with the fatal fight at Rukh, a lost town which was a prosperous place leading to the legends during the Sinbad the sailor time. The town's ancient civilization, gold mines and strategic location attracts not only scientists, governments but criminals and rebels.
Even though crucial battles throughout the story, readers can still enjoy the passionate of love and the harmony between human being and wild life such as elephants and camels. Not to mention the excitement of the archaeologists' and geologists' discovery of ancient treasures and fossils.

It is a very readable book.
In this latest part of the Woden born series the story is set in Mali, Africa. I have read them all but it is a separate story.

The narrator and Alice have agreed to escort an expedition team of archaeologists and geologists during their trekking in the desert. The action starts from the very first page and escalates as they approach Timbuktu in Mali.

The chain of events really starts when they reach the salt mines and learning about the fate of the missing salt caravan.

This is another adventure full of action, good humour, love, collaboration and co-operation between the tribes as well as the deadly rivalry with the Blue men the Tuaregs and their slaves.

The heroic deeds of the main characters are masterfully intertwined with the real life political, social and economic status of the common people and expertly blended with the rich history of this African nation.

Definitely worth a read.
