In Cartesia, no one is free except for those who don't understand the meaning of the word. The Council, populated and run by deviants and murderous politicians, have reduced nearly all cities to either impoverished wastelands or places operated solely for their hedonism. But the Shakespeare-loving vigilante named Shal has had enough of the Council's tyranny and she's going to put an end to them once and for all. Her struggle to protect her stepsister, escape Malay Prison, avenge her father's death, and do it all without being sent to the Herald of the dead called the Capesman, takes her on a maddening journey of war and emotion she'd never seen coming; especially not with only one eye. From the Herald's Wearied Eye follows Shal, a soldier named Raoul, and the Capesman through the world of Cartesia where the good live underground, God is long dead, and even one's own mind cannot be trusted.

This story unfolds slowly, like waiting to reach the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop. Layer after gory layer of back story is revealed through characters you hate to love and love to hate. McHugh has painted a detailed world of doom and gloom that follows the history of earth after the death of God. When evil rises to power unchecked, there is little hope for what remains of civilized humanity. That hope is named Shal - the one-eyed, chainsaw-wielding dispenser of justice. Her mission is simple, destroy the Council and any evil that is associated with it. You won't be able to put this one down.

Herald's is yet another creative and original Jessica McHugh novel. While the main plotline follows the life of the main character, Shal, and her much warranted path of revenge, I was most fascinated with the side story of religion and God and the Capesman. It's a really intriguing take on what the world may become if God were to cease to exist and her spin on HOW that happens is beyond my wildest imagination. Each page is hugely entertaining and once more I felt drawn to follow the story to the end because of how vested I became in the characters and their lives. How Jessica manages to create entirely believable new worlds and beings and realities in each of her books will never cease to amaze me, and will always keep me coming back for more! This is a very, VERY talented author who isn't getting the kudos, nor the recognition she so very much deserves and I highly suggest that anyone who enjoys a satisfying and enlightening read to pick up one, or all, of Jessica McHugh's books. You will most assuredly not be disappointed in her fresh ideas, her creative story lines and her natural talent for weaving a great story.
With my busy schedule, it's tough to find a book that I can get into -- and finish!

Herald's was perfect!

A short novella about what happens when the world goes to - well, when things just take a bad turn. It tells tales of power hungry bad guys versus good guys with tainted pasts. The imagery was fantastic, putting me right into a world I hope I never have to live in. The characters pull you in, to a point where you can identify with (almost) all of them, even if you don't want to. It's a book I will most definitely read again.

I love "end of the world as we know it" stories - and this was the most original I've come across so far! Great story! Love it!

Looking forward to reading Song of Eidolons and A Touch of Scarlet!
The story did put me in mind of another Jessica McHugh book, `Rabbits in the garden'. Although the stories were different there were similarities,...the main character was a girl, locked away in an abusive prison/institution some of the abuse that goes on in these places is quite imaginative and not very nice..........Where do these ideas come from???!!!

I think what fascinates me about JM's books is the variety, and the strangeness of them, there's no way to predict the out come, she invents all kinds of different species and worlds that you have nothing in your memory bank to apply to them so can't imagine what could possibly come next.

As usual I have been left with things to think about, there was a definite moral to this story, and it was nice to see that Shal did infact find peace even though it was not in the way I could ever have foreseen.
I love a strong heroine and Shal is about as kick-a$$ as they come. A one-eyed woman who has bee through hell and lived to avenge her friends and family is up against the Brave New World-style government.

The characters are so perfectly (and gruesomely) developed with incredible back stories. The book was dark and sick and I just could not put it down. It was unpredictable and believable, and it left me wanting more.

Excellent read, and re-read!
